Facing East: The Best of Alexandra King
The art of Belly Dance is magnified in the diversity of its styles. Belly Dance originated from 6 distinct regions of the Middle and Far East, and each point of origin gave birth to a distinct flavor of the art. Then, over the past 100 years, as it migrated across the planet, and evolved over time, it morphed into various new styles, quite different from the earliest incarnations. The resulting variety of styles we have today is a stunning testament to the breadth and depth of this beautiful art. This show reflects this diversity and encapsulates the magic that is Belly Dance!
ABOUT ALEXANDRA KING
Alexandra King (co-founder of the UCSB Middle East Ensemble) began her dance training facing west. In her teens she studied jazz, tap, ballet and point. In her young adult life she was struck by the beauty of the dances of the east. She studied BharataNatyam, flamenco and belly dance, to name of few. Since then, she has faced east and never turned back.
A one-hour presentation of her work featuring many stars of the art, including Elvan, Faith J. Daniels, Judeen and Paulina.
