T'ai Chi - Gentle Healthy Chinese Art of Flow and Power
Yang style - 24 form
T’ai Chi is both a graceful and healthy moving meditation, and powerful martial art. Originated in China, and practiced worldwide for health, balance & vitality, T’ai Chi integrates mind, body and spirit through gentle, flowing, conscious breath and movements. Practicing T’ai chi generates internal energy, mindfulness, ease and serenity, while cultivating smooth and powerful life energy (a.k.a. chi, qi, prana, ki). Studies have found T’ai chi to improve muscular strength, flexibility, fitness, arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, respiratory disease and other chronic diseases, as well as improving balance, preventing falls, helping posture and building overall immunity.* T’ai chi has also been shown to improve mental illness, depression and stress. T’ai chi is an healthy wholly integrated art form that can be practiced at any age with any level of fitness.
There are several styles of T’ai chi. Nusa will lead this class in the Yang style 24 form. The Yang style was developed by Yang Luchan in the early 19th century, who brought a more gentle and flowing movement style to some of the more syncopated earlier forms, while keeping T’ai Chi’s full power.
Students will learn the Yang style 24 form, which is one of the more familiar forms. Once students learn the basics, deepening practice can be a calming meditative space, a rich terrain of inner exploration, and an energizing, mind-clearing, health building practice. The 24 basic moves can be learned with ease, and their mastery can offer a lifetime of refinement, awakenings, joy and discovery.
T’ai chi draws much of the power of its movements from archetypes in nature. The rich imagery, focused awareness, with gentle movements, can transform time, and are an evocative part of the intrigue and power of this moving meditation.
We will begin class with a Qigong warm up and then move into T’ai Chi.
Join us for this healthy moving meditation suitable for all bodies, spirits and energy levels. Please come dressed comfortably for movement. Share any health concerns with Nusa, so she can assure the teaching addresses your need. Classes are suitable for any level — all are welcome.
